When used to make comparative xor superlative adjective, pronounce [ply] unless there’s liaison.
Say [plys] at the end of a sentence.
In negative constructions, say [ply].
When Plus starts a sentence, it can mean two opposite things depending on the pronunciation.
Plus de livres ! [plys]
‘More books’
Plus de livres ! [ply]
‘No more books’
However, there are some fixed expressions that are always negative and are thus all [ply].
- Plus ([ply]) besoin (de)::’no more need (of)'
- Plus ([ply]) maintenant::’not any more'
- Plus ([ply]) que::‘only [amount] left’
When in pairs, plus … plus ’the more … the more’, say [ply].
Plus vous serez détendu, le plus tôt vous dormirez.
When plus ‘+’, say [plys].
