Plus pronunciation and meaning

#cards/french/grammar #review

When used to make comparative xor superlative adjective, pronounce [ply] unless there’s liaison.

Say [plys] at the end of a sentence.

In negative constructions, say [ply].

When Plus starts a sentence, it can mean two opposite things depending on the pronunciation.

Plus de livres ! [plys]
‘More books’

Plus de livres ! [ply]
‘No more books’

However, there are some fixed expressions that are always negative and are thus all [ply].

  • Plus ([ply]) besoin (de)::’no more need (of)'
  • Plus ([ply]) maintenant::’not any more'
  • Plus ([ply]) que::‘only [amount] left’

When in pairs, plus … plus ’the more … the more’, say [ply].

Plus vous serez détendu, le plus tôt vous dormirez.

When plus ‘+’, say [plys].
