  • Types of semantic relationships:
    • Synonyms and Antonyms
    • Hyponym $\subset$ hypernym
      • For example, the hyponym rouge is a subset of the hypernym coleur
    • Note that the semantic space, which refers to the range of meaning of words, can be different for different languages
    • polysemy refers to the many possible meanings of the same word
  • On definition
    • Definition have trouble capturing the meaning of a word because edge cases break down
    • Another way to define a word is to show a prototype
    • Some words like function words can’t really be defined alone
      • People use predicate calculus to figure out their meaning
