Usually, two pieces are needed to make something negative.

A note on négations doubles: for whatever reason, sometimes they make a positive and sometimes make a stronger negative. Sometimes it takes a triple negative to make a positive.

ne ... pas makes a verb negative

Je ne comprends pas.
‘I do not understand.’

ne ... rien makes a verb do nothing

Je n’achète rien.
‘I’m buying nothing.’

ne ... pas rien makes a verb not do nothing

Je n’achète pas rien.
‘I’m not buying nothing.’

ne ... aucune means the verb applies to none of the object

Il n’aime aucun programme de télé-réalité.
‘He likes no TV-reality show.’

ne ... pas aucune doesn’t quite work for some reason

ne ... que makes a verb only do something (not technically a negative)

Je n’ai que trois livres.
‘I have only three books.’

ne ... pas que makes a verb not only do something

Je n’ai pas que trois livres.
‘I don’t have only three books.’

ne ... jamais makes a verb never happen. ¹

Tu n’es jamais à l’heure.
‘You’re never on time.’

This can be combined with aucun, personne, plus, que, and rien.

Je ne vois jamais personne.
‘I never see anyone.’

Tu n’as jamais qu’une seule idée.
‘You never have only one idea.’

ne ... pas jamais doesn’t quite work for some reason

ne ... plus means the verb is no longer happening

Je n’ai plus d’argent.
‘I have no more money.’

This can be combined with aucun, jamais, personne, que, and rien.

Je ne veux plus aucune idée
‘I don’t want any more ideas’

Il ne reste plus qu’un problème
‘There’s only one problem left.’

Vous n’êtes plus jamais seul.
‘You are never alone anymore.’

ne ... pas plus doesn’t seem to work

ne ... personne means nobody is the object of the verb

Je ne connais personne ici.
‘I do not know anyone here.’

ne ... pas personne doesn’t quite work for some reason

ne ... guère hardly

Il n’a guère mangé

ne ... ni ... ni neither … nor

Il ne m’a dit ni oui ni non

Je ne mange ni fruits ni légumes

ne ... nulle part nowhere

J’ai cherché partout, mais je ne l’ai trouvé nulle part

ne ... point is a more emphatic version of ne ... pas

Il n’est point poli comme son frère.

ne ... pas du tout not at all

Je ne comprends pas du tout

ne ... plus que only

Il ne reste plus qu’un sandwich.

ne ... pas plus de no more than

Il ne reste pas plus d’un sandwich.

Cases when personne xor rien in a negation are used as the subject

Personne ne sait où aller.
‘No one knows where to go.’

Rien ne s’est passé.
‘Nothing happened.’

In compound tenses or dual verb constructions, personne after ne goes after the past principle but rien goes after the other verb

Je n’ai vu personne.

Je ne peux voir personne.

but

Je n’ai rien mangé.

Je ne vais rien manger.

The pas is often omitted in some situations

• Ni lui ni moi::(Neither he nor I)

• ça ne fait rien::(it doesn’t matter)

• de rien::(of nothing, you’re welcome)

• il n’y a pas de quoi::(there is no need to, you are welcome)

• n’importe::(doesn’t matter)

• n’importe où::(no matter where)

• n’importe quand::(no matter when)

• pas encore::(not yet)
